PERSONALITY ••
HEADSTRONG -- No one can honestly say Emily Prentiss doesn't have a mind of her own. For starters, she's quite headstrong, a trait that is typically frowned upon in law enforcement but still useful nonetheless. When given orders, she'll obey them, sure, but that doesn't mean she won't question the morality of them if needed. Sometimes she'll even go so far as to defy them if she thinks it's in the best interest of all involved, and this has gotten her into trouble with her superiors before, though her loyalty and otherwise solid obedience has kept her from outright being fired- she's a good agent, entirely rule-following or not.
INDEPENDENT -- She has been described by her friends and coworkers as the "lone wolf" type, and it's quite the accurate description at that. She doesn't rely on anyone but herself, and no one else relies on her, and that's the way she'd like to keep things if possible. Sure, there was a time when she would've been happy to settle down with someone or even have kids, but the circumstances as well as her increased age have made her brush such thoughts off as childish dreams. She isn't unhappy, either- she enjoys her independence, even if she definitely isn't against the occasional get-together or party. It's just part of who she is.
FLIRTATIOUS -- Moving around a lot as a kid meant that Emily had to find other ways to fit in, and flirting made it all the easier for her to do just that. She has standards, of course, and morals to go along with it all, but if she's attracted to a man and there's nothing standing in her way, she'll make a move. Admittedly, she's had very few serious relationships before, and has never exactly been head over heels in love, but her independence is more to blame for that than anything. She doesn't let herself get too close to people- doesn't want to get too close to people, not beyond a select few- and that's that.
HARDWORKING -- Despite her flirty and somewhat disobedient personality, she is a hardworking woman. She enjoys what she does- or, at least, enjoys putting criminals behind bars and bringing closure to the loved ones of their victims. There are aspects of her job that are definitely far less pleasant, such as the gruesome discoveries and loss of lives they face everyday, not to mention the tediousness of the paperwork involved. Sometimes, she finds herself questioning whether her job really is worth it- but then she is reminded of the lives she has saved, and the families she's made whole once again, and she can only say that it is.
INTELLIGENT -- She may not be a genius, but Emily does have a working bran, and is fairly intelligent to boot. She knows multiple languages thanks to traveling a lot as a child, namely English, Arabic, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, and even Greek. She enjoys reading and has a taste for foreign movies, and even a bit of science fiction on occasion. She's always considered herself a bit of a nerd, which makes dating difficult- she can play it cool for weeks at a time, and yet she eventually lets something slip that completely turns the man off, just another factor resulting in the success (or rather, lack thereof) of her love life.
SENSITIVE -- While she is better at compartmentalizing than most, she's still a highly sensitive woman, even if she tries to keep herself under control. She's not overly emotional, and definitely won't cry at the drop of a pin, but things lodge just under her skin and remain there much easier than they do with some people- anything from a scornful remark to a jab at her past is enough to set her off sometimes, and while she isn't a particularly violent person, setting her off is still a very bad idea.
FEMININE -- She can run, spar, and shoot a gun just as well as any man, sure, but Emily still does have a feminine side. She won't wear a dress or even a skirt without good reason, sure, but she still doesn't mind talking shoes or chick flicks with girlfriends every now and then, and she enjoys being taken out on a date every now and then just as much as the next woman. She's hardly a girly person- she likes foreign movies and satirical novels more than anything else- but at the same time, she is a woman, and she's not afraid to act like one.

HISTORY •• Emily Prentiss was born into a single-parent family to a young mother, and never really knew her father beyond the fact that he was another diplomat for the US. Because of her mother's job, she moved frequently as a child and lived in many different countries across Europe and Africa, and she picked up on a total of six different languages besides English during that time. However, her relationship with her mother was far from strong, and that lead to complications in her home life even at a young age.
Because of the frequency with which the family moved, Emily was frequently recognized as an outcast in her schools and never really fit in anywhere. This led to her doing the one thing she knew would get her some attention and hopefully help her become more popular or at least fit in better at school- she started to sleep around. It worked for the next couple of years, too, until her mother was stationed in Italy alongside another diplomat and Emily was able to make her first two real friends, Matthew Benton and John Cooley. For once, popularity didn't matter- she had them, and the three of them were inseparable, even ending up in the same church. By the time she was fifteen, she and John Cooley had even become an item.
Things took a turn for the worst that year, though, when Emily was hit with an unexpected bombshell- she was pregnant, and Cooley was the father. Hoping for the best, she confronted him with the news first, though he was quick to turn her away and say that he wanted no part in her or the baby's life- that he was too young to be a father, he claimed. Betrayed, she ran to the only person she still had in her life that she knew wouldn't fault her for any of it- Matthew. He took her to the priest of their church for guidance, though the man was quick to tell them that if Emily had an abortion, she would no longer be welcome back in his congregation. However, seeing no other option, Matthew found a doctor that would perform the procedure and they did just that.
Afterwards, as she had been warned, Emily was rejected from the church and Matthew soon fell away from his religion of his own accord, even falling into drug use. Within a couple of months, Emily's mother was stationed in a new country and Emily brought with her, breaking up the three friends for good. Despite the scare from months before, she fell back to her old habits of sleeping around and going to great lengths for attention, and even had a few rebellious phases, including a brief goth period when she was eighteen.
After graduating high school, she was accepted into Yale and began studying criminology there, though she never did have any particular reason as to why she chose that of all fields- she always brushed it off as simply her way of wanting to make the world a better place, and that was that. She worked a job as a waitress on the side to try to pay for the apartment she was staying in, though she wasn't the most skilled at the trade and her mother and her ended up falling into a mutual silent agreement- the ambassador would deposit the occasional bit of money into Emily's bank account, and they'd both pretend that neither of them knew better.
After years of studying and hard work, Emily graduated from university, though it was another two years before she was finally offered a job out of the London Interpol office. Over the course of the next few years, she grew very close to her team, and her boss in particular. Clyde Easter and her had a special relationship of sorts, and got along quite well while still managing to get at each other's throats every now and then. He recognized her as a fine agent, though, and that was what mattered.
When Emily was thirty, a man named Ian Doyle became known as an international threat, an illegal weapons dealer and a terrorist combined. He was slippery, too, and almost impossible to catch, as well as being too intelligent to fall for most traps or undercover operations sent his way. By the time she was thirty one, Easter had gained permission to send her undercover to try to get as close to Doyle as possible without revealing who she was, and surprisingly, it worked. Within the month, she and Ian Doyle were lovers, and she was able to start secretly relaying information back to Interpol.
However, for the sake of the terrorist not growing suspicious, the information had to be given bit by bit, and it took another year before a profile was built up enough that Doyle could be captured and almost indefinitely convicted with multiple crimes against humanity. He was arrested and shipped off to a prison in North Korea that even she wasn't given the location of. She remained with Interpol for another two years before the unit she had been a part of disbanded, and after that decided to return to her home country of the US, where she was soon employed by the FBI.
It was another few years before she joined the BAU, though she was not immediately trusted by her coworkers. Neither of the heads of her unit had approved the transfer, and suspicion arose that her mother had played a significant role in it all. She managed to convince agent Hotchner to give her a chance, though, and was eventually accepted as part of the team, growing very close to her new coworkers in the process, and vice versa.
However, nearly eight years after Doyle had been arrested, he escaped prison and began to hunt down the members of the unit that had put him behind bars. He managed to kill off three of their number, with Easter and Emily being the only ones to survive. Emily ended up abandoning her unit at the BAU to find and kill Doyle herself, though he managed to subdue her and take her to a warehouse in Boston where she was tortured before managing to escape and beating Doyle, though she ended up being stabbed in the struggle that ensued.
Her team, with Easter's help, managed to locate her whereabouts in time to save her life but not soon enough to stop Doyle from escaping. She was rushed to hospital, coding several times in the ambulance before arriving and being rushed into emergency surgery. There, she recovered and went into hiding in Europe, and all but two of her team members were informed that she had died. It was seven months before Doyle resurfaced, his son Declan having gone missing, and she returned back to the BAU to assist with the investigation. Both of Declan's parents were killed in the process, though, as well as Declan's nanny, and he was put into the foster care system while Emily reclaimed her spot in Hotch's unit.
It was another year before she spoke to Easter again, who had returned to Interpol and been promoted. He approached her with an offer to fill the position of the chief of Interpol's London branch, and she finally made the decision to accept it, quitting the BAU and saying goodbye to the life she'd come to love in the process. Now, she's taken up residence in an apartment in London and works out of the Interpol office there, still keeping in contact with her old friends at the BAU and Easter, who she's grown closer to over the past while. It's hardly the life she thought she'd end up living, but it's one she doesn't mind at that.
