PERSONALITY ••
acquired taste •• Nikola can be, and has been, described as an "acquired taste". Unfortunately, this is very much true. His mood shifts and flies around as if he has multiple personalities, though he doesn't. One minute, he'll be calm, cool, collected and civil. The next, he'll be wildly ecstatic and excited, or perhaps even murderous if the moment so strikes him. It's unpredictable at best until you get to know him and his motives, and even then you might be grasping at straws a little bit to figure him out.
sense of humour •• He's the kind to tell a joke, usually dry, sarcastic humour, at the wrong time even. It isn't that he doesn't recognize it as a bad time, either - it's that he truly doesn't care. Every time is the right time to him, whether you think so or not. This is caused, in part, by a sort of nonchalance about his life. He's a bit flippant about almost everything, and this is where that side of him really, truly shines.
noble •• He doesn't hold much regard for any sort of rules, not unless it pleases him at that moment in time, and so he is often being labeled as the bad guy. This isn't always true, mind you. Hidden deep, deep, deep down in his psyche is a truly noble side that would give his life for a close friend or someone he loves. The problem with this is that it shows itself so rarely, and there is almost always something in it for him when it does. If you're lucky, that something is the thought of your company in the future, though don't count on it. It's probably something much more complicated, like you're one of the few intelligent minds he can bounce ideas off of. He thinks of himself first and foremost. If being the good guy will increase the chance of his survival, or the survival of someone he might need to help him in the future, then trust me, he'll be the good guy, no questions asked.
intellectual •• You can't deny his brilliance, even if you want to. He earns the title of "genius" with relative ease. He's able to think ridiculously far in the future and plan ahead pretty well, when he wants to.
actor •• He is usually brutally honest, often exaggerating the truth and making it hurt all the more. Don't mistake this for an inability to lie, however - if it suits him, he can lie straight to your face and never blink an eye, with no indication of if he's truthful or not. It drives others crazy that he can sit there and not care whether what he says is truth or not, but the thing is, he does care. He cares about which one will suit his needs better.
vicious temper •• For all his supposed self-control (which is only present with the help of medicine created by Helen), Nikola has quite the temper. It might not be displayed all the time, but he isn't exactly hard to piss off. He'll growl and grumble and openly ignore you at first, and this is where you should stop. Those who don't end up in a whirlwind of rage, and, friend or not, he can and will tear you to shreds. You've been forewarned.
self-depreciating •• Modesty is an extreme overstatement when it comes to Nikola and how he sees himself - of course, only in his mind. To the outside world, he thinks he's the best thing out there, but trust me - all of it, every last cocky grin, is an act. Nothing more. If he wasn't so hell-bent on keeping this hidden, he would never praise himself, and in fact would regularly put himself down instead. He would never do so without cause, of course. He won't change the subject to pity his miserable existence; for that is far too much attention being paid to him. He isn't doing this to seek attention, rather he truly believes he is worthless, something that grew from a rather rough childhood and has never quite managed to fade.
lonely •• He doesn't go seeking friends, nor will he ever be likely to, but that hardly means he wants to be alone and hated by most he meets. His lack of self-confidence leaves him too afraid of being a bother by sharing with others, and his fear leaves him wary of strangers, and as a result he finds himself completely alone even in a crowd of others who are listening to him speak - because it isn't really him speaking at all.
broken •• There are glimmers here and there of a better, less obnoxious personality, hidden somewhere beneath the dark cloud of sarcasm and ego that seems to hover around him. Whether these things will show ever again or not is debatable, especially as fractured and unpredictable as they are. The clear sign that someone, somewhere, broke him and left him to pick up the pieces is there, if you dig deep enough. It'll be difficult, of course - he's had over a hundred years practice at throwing those walls up - but it'll be worth it. He hasn't managed to piece it all back together yet, and they aren't fitting together quite the same any more anyway, leaving him struggling for some sense of balance and finding none.
caring •• By god, he'd hide it to his dying breathe if he could; but deep down, once he decides you're his, you'll never get rid of the guy. Ever. And, yeah, true, he might not always show he cares in a way you can understand, but he tries. When he's trying, that when you can usually get a glimpse into just how fractured apart this poor fellow is, for he'll find himself at a loss for words or overcompensating for something that he knows he's lacking in. If you're "his," you deserve the best. Far better than he knows how to give - in his opinion.
potentially suicidal •• Don't get me wrong - he's not about to go drown himself in the ocean on purpose. As such, he isn't truly suicidal. Nor is he crazy, as proven by his clear and concise judgments. However, his lack of regard for his own life has caused him to be considered both crazy and suicidal - at least among those who didn't know he was immortal. If faced with a whole platoon of soldiers, he will gladly stand up to them on his own to save another. It is his twisted form of trying to prove to himself he's worth something - and he definitely believes his death is better than yours.

HISTORY •• Nikola has had a very long life. He was born in the Austrian Empire, in the village of Smiljan. He was the fourth of five children, though his older brother was killed in a horse riding accident when Nikola was five. This changed his life - and he does remember the shift. He was blamed for his brother's death - he'd been out with him, after all, and had nearly died himself in the accident. His mother spiraled into depression, his father ridiculed him at every occasion - and his older sisters took after him enough to only make it worse on young Nikola. He fell to caring for his younger sister, the one person who didn't understand it all and learned to love him despite it all - but the damage had been done. He believed his father was right - and no matter what he did in years to come, behind the smile was always a bitter feeling of failure.
He was, however, incredibly intelligent - despite anything his family chose to say - and memorized many books in his post-secondary years, with many assuming he had a photographic memory though he never confirmed this. He just grinned and continued on. That, along with the synesthesia he can confirm he does, indeed, have has made his life uniquely tailored for science due to his inability to forget and his ability to imagine things - usually not quite at will, but still - in such realistic detail that they may as well be in front of him.
Come 1886, he was a member of the Five, with the others being John Druitt, Helen Magnus, Nigel Griffin and James Watson. They conducted their experiments at Oxford and each injected themselves with the source blood. It was at this point that Nikola believed he truly became who he was meant to be - a vampire, as well as gaining electrical powers. He initially battled with bloodlust, and was even suspected of the Ripper murders until proven innocent by Watson.
After assisting England in the Second World War, Nikola had Helen help him fake his death to stop the spy agencies from searching for him. He lived underground, hidden from the world for over 60 years, watching the Cabal. He resurfaced to "save" Helen from them when they were, in fact, after him due to his experiments in recreating the vampire race. He took some time to recuperate from John's attempt to kill him in this incident, but managed to show up again in time to help them retrieve the remaining source blood.
From there, things got crazy - the Cabal released the Lazarus virus, stole the source blood and turned innocent people - including Ashley Magnus - into ruthless vampires. Nikola helped fight back, defending UK Sanctuary as best he could and attempting to save Ashley. In the end, all he could do was create an antidote to the Lazarus virus. He left to assist John in undermining the Cabal and bringing them down.
He reappeared later running a drug clinic for rich teenagers in Mexico, using the alias Dr. Heinrich Baumschlager. He was, in truth, altering the teen's DNA to turn them into vampires - though this was supposed to happen when they were much older. One of the teens died, activating his vampire DNA. In the process of stopping him and his friends, Nikola was devamped. This resulted in a short-lived depression - until he discovered his magnetic abilities which had been activated. From there, he disappeared again, trying to find ways to make this power become extremely useful.
He ended up trapped in a cave, managing to send a message to Helen for help. After they managed to get out, Nikola took up residence at the Old City Sanctuary for some time, assisting in the discovery of Hollow Earth. He disappeared for awhile again, only to return and go with Helen to discover an old Praxian stronghold. They ended up trapped inside and Nikola nearly died - until Helen managed to extract some vampire blood from a crystallized Athena. Later, Athena tried to kill them both but was outsmarted and killed, along with the remaining crystallized vampires, in an explosion. He quickly wandered off on his own again, occasionally showing up just to pester Helen.
Then came SCIU - of which, he was the head for a short time. However, after being unceremoniously 'unhired', he returned to the Sanctuary in Old City and assisted with preventing a massacre of abnormals at the hands of the government. In the end, however, a final price was paid - the life of the last of the Five, save him, Helen Magnus. Or, at least, as far as he's aware - she hasn't contacted him and after months of searching he failed to find her and thereby took up the mantle at the head of the Sanctuary Network. No one's particularly happy about it - but he's managed to keep it all running relatively smoothly in her honour.
